The orthodontist may use one of the following braces to correct your dental problem: • Traditional Braces These are usually made from high-grade stainless steel, consisting of metal brackets, which are attached to each tooth using cement. A thin arch wire is used to link the brackets with each other. This applies pressure on the teeth, causing them to move into the desired position. Tiny elastics called ligatures or o-rings are used to connect the arch wires to the brackets. Your orthodontist will change these ligatures every time he tightens the braces. • Ceramic Braces These are a popular alternative to traditional braces. The brackets here are made from a clear, transparent ceramic material. Many orthodontists use wires that are the same colour as the patient’s teeth to make the braces less visible to others. A very good choice for adult orthodontic treatment, these are slightly expensive than traditional braces but with a faster treatment process. • Lingual Braces These are the same as traditional braces, with the only difference being they are placed on the inside of the teeth.
