What are the Different Types of Braces Available These Days?

Orthodontic treatments can correct crooked or crowded teeth, overbite, underbite and incorrect jaw movement. If these issues are not treated immediately, they can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, headaches and earaches; they can also cause speech problems. Braces can help improve your oral health and enhance your appearance significantly. If you are looking for Invisalign® braces in Kamloops, Aberdeen Dental Arts can help. We offer quality orthodontic solutions to all our clients along with implant dentistry and teeth whitening services.

The orthodontist may use one of the following braces to correct your dental problem: • Traditional Braces These are usually made from high-grade stainless steel, consisting of metal brackets, which are attached to each tooth using cement. A thin arch wire is used to link the brackets with each other. This applies pressure on the teeth, causing them to move into the desired position. Tiny elastics called ligatures or o-rings are used to connect the arch wires to the brackets. Your orthodontist will change these ligatures every time he tightens the braces. • Ceramic Braces These are a popular alternative to traditional braces. The brackets here are made from a clear, transparent ceramic material. Many orthodontists use wires that are the same colour as the patient’s teeth to make the braces less visible to others. A very good choice for adult orthodontic treatment, these are slightly expensive than traditional braces but with a faster treatment process. • Lingual Braces These are the same as traditional braces, with the only difference being they are placed on the inside of the teeth. They are less likely to be noticed by other people and are just as effective. The flip side is you have to visit the dentist more frequently for these and they are very difficult to keep clean. They are not suitable to correct severe orthodontic conditions requiring extensive treatments. They treatment process is longer and are more expensive compared to traditional braces. • Self-Ligating Braces They use brackets that have clips or doors to hold on to the wire. Available in both metal and ceramic versions, they trap less food, are less painful than other braces and require fewer trips to the orthodontist. • Invisalign Though Invisalign is usually more expensive than traditional braces, it offers several benefits to the patient. It is virtually invisible, easy to maintain and can be removed while cleaning your teeth. You will not experience any tenderness that usually results from wired brackets. You can eat all your favorite foods and not have to visit the orthodontist every month to get the brackets or wires tightened. Invisalign, however, cannot be used to treat severe orthodontic conditions but can only correct fairly standard alignment issues.
