Different Types of Dental Crowns for Different Uses

Dental crowns are used to cover and repair teeth that are broken, cracked or decayed. They’re also often used in conjunction with other devices, like implants or bridges. With so many possible applications, it’s natural that different materials get used to create prosthetic teeth.

Types of dental crowns If your dentist suggests that you need a dental crown and you live in or near Kamloops, there are a number of choices available to you. • Gold alloy One of the oldest materials in cosmetic dentistry is still popular today. However, gold used in dentistry is now mixed with other metals and is made from a combination of noble metals (defined as metals that resist corrosion and oxidation) that are strong and long lasting. The colour of crowns made with gold alloys won’t blend in well with your natural teeth, making this a better choice when strength is more important than looks. This material is most often used for molars and back teeth. • Ceramic This material is mostly used for front teeth, or those that show when you smile. Ceramic matches the colour and texture of natural teeth, making them almost imperceptible. Because the material is brittle, it can’t stand up to the heavy biting force of back teeth and molars. • Base metal alloys Base metal alloys offer strength and resistance that comes close to that of gold alloys. They require the least amount of healthy tooth to be removed before fitting. This is a good choice for people who need crowns on out of sight teeth. • Porcelain fused to metal Made of a metal core with a thin ceramic layer, these types of crowns combine the best of both metal and ceramic materials. They’re primarily used for premolars or teeth that can be seen when you smile but still need to be strong. The downside to this material is that over time, a grey line may become noticeable due to the patient’s gum receding. They also look less natural, because light can’t penetrate the metal core as can ceramic or porcelain on its own. • Zirconia Zirconia is one of several newer ceramic-like materials that combine the strength of metal with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain.
